The city of roses, Beervana, Bridgetown, whatever you want to call it, for me– it was my second place I called home.
If you are planning a trip to Portland and have no idea where to begin searching (I’ll give you a hint, it’s not Yelp) read on! I moved to PDX in 2018, and I found that when it came to finding the best places to eat, it really required some walking on foot. The food trucks, the coffee shops, THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. If you do a search for coffee even within a specific neighborhood, you will likely find 15+ recommendations within a few miles.
The best thing about Portland, is how everything feels ‘local’. Like you already know the person serving you the instant you sit down. Here are the top spots I recommend to my friends:
Radio Room was the first restaurant I went to when I moved to Portland, and ‘The Starving Artist’, A glass of wine, soup, and bread for $9 really sold me on my decision to move here. They also have fireplaces and an outdoor patio both upstairs and downstairs. Awesome spot to visit either in the AM for coffee, or after work it gets very social. It’s in the Alberta Neighborhood which is one of my favorites.
Porque No is the typical answer you’d get from most people. It’s a staple of Portland and while it’s not your typical taco truck, this place has great flavor and the staff here make this place what it is. I love the Mississippi location for it’s close proximity to Bar Bar and Mississippi Studios.
Taqueria Los Gorditos has three different menus, : one for meat lovers, one for vegetarians, and one for vegans!
Teote is probably the place I’d recommend based on my experience. I love their fireplace, upstairs decor, and overall vibes in this place!
Other Notable Mentions: Stella Taco, Conquistador, Xico
**Disclaimer** I think i’m too biased when it comes to Mexican, and I wouldn’t say you’d find the best in this city. (Sorry Portland! California + Washington will always have my little Mexican-loving heart.)
Food trucks! They are on every corner. My two favorite locations are in Mississippi, St. Johns, and Piedmont Station. I tend to go for sushi, sandwiches, or salads, but you can find anything from waffle fries to bbq to kombucha on tap here.
Pastrami Zombie - My favorite sandwich when I am HUNGRY.
Teppanyaki Hut - SUSHI BURRITOS. I am getting hungry writing this blog post…
Luc Lac is a popular counter-serve offering pho, banh mi & other Vietnamese favorites in a stylish setting.
XLB! Soup. Dumplings. Line is usually out the door, need I say more?
Portland Mongolian Grill, the owners here are SO nice and it’s a great spot to warm up after a hike.
Going Out for Drinks?
Check these spots out:
Portland City Grill
White Owl Social Club
Hubers (Spanish Coffees at the Oldest Restaurant in Portland!)
Doug Fir Lounge - try to check out a concert here if you can!
Holocene - They have themed music nights.
Great Happy Hours:
Bar Casa Valle
Get Your Game On:
Ground Kontrol - Old school arcade games, including Donkey Kong, Quber, and Pacman. Love the retro lights in the ceilings and on the walls here, it actually feels like i’m INSIDE an arcade game.
Grand Central Bowling + Arcade - I love playing games here and having drinks under their huge disco ball. Also… Big Buck Hunter is my love language and they have two so I don’t have to fight someone for it. Usually.
Punch Bowl Social Club - If you find yourself downtown… and needing a place to be social. Did I mention they have a Bloody Mary bar on weekends? You’re welcome. Right below the movie theater which is also convenient.
Mcmenamin’s Tavern and Pool - Pool Tables and Shuffle Boards are common at a lot of McMenamins. Check out McMenamins Ringler’s Pub if you are closer to the Pearl District.
Wurst has skeeball, pool, and some video games. Super fun!
Brunch It Up Here:
I can probably go back and forth between these three brunch spots and never need another option. They are all amazing and I can’t recommend them enough.
Mother’s Bistro and Bar:
Order their pancakes.
Turkey Cran Sandwich.
Best Chilaquiles. EVER.
I’m going to call in reinforcements here since Kyla is a pro at knowing the best breweries in Portland. (Stay tuned for updated) In the meantime, here are some of my favorites:
“Great Notion wins all” — Kyla.
What to Order: Blueberry Muffin Sour, I Love it When You Call Me Big Papaya, Moon Pie, Key Lime Pie, Unbalanced Breakfast, any and all of the Mochi beer.
